Marcus Porcius Cato, also known as Cato the Censor, the Elder and the Wise
“The worst ruler is one who cannot rule himself.”
Marcus Porcius Cato, also known as Cato the Censor, the Elder, and the Wise, was a Roman soldier, senator, and historian. He championed Roman virtues and opposed Hellenization. Cato wrote the first Roman histories in Latin, including his work Origines, which is now fragmentary. His rambling work De agri cultura covers agriculture, farming, rituals, and recipes, making it the oldest extant prose written in Latin. Born in 234 BC in Tusculum, he served in various political offices, including consul and censor. His famous line, “Carthage must be destroyed,” reflects his disdain for Carthage
