Ajita Kesakambali
Ajita Kesakambali, an ancient Indian materialist philosopher, is remembered as one of the earliest proponents of Lokayata thought. He rejected the authority of the Vedas, denied the existence of an afterlife, karma, and rebirth, and dismissed the soul as separate from the body. Ajita taught that consciousness arises from the body’s material elements and ceases at death, leaving nothing beyond. He emphasized that pleasure and pain are natural experiences, not tied to divine reward or punishment. His radical skepticism challenged prevailing spiritual doctrines, making him a pioneer of rational inquiry. Ajita’s uncompromising materialism influenced later Charvaka philosophy.
The Body and the soul are one and the same.
