Bhakta Kavi Narsinh Mehta
Narsinh Mehta (1414–1488) was a revered 15th-century poet-saint of Gujarat, hailed as the Adi Kavi(first poet) of Gujarati literature. Born in Talaja, he lived in Junagadh, dedicating his life to Lord Krishna through, passionate bhakti, ignoring caste boundaries. Mehta composed over 750 poems (padd) focusing on wisdom, detachment, and devotion. He is best known for composing the bhajan “Vaishnav Jan To,” which later became a favorite of Mahatma Gandhi. Despite facing social opposition for his inclusive, devotional lifestyle, his spiritual legacy has shaped Gujarati identity for over five centuries.
