I am a wanderer

I am a wanderer, I am a wanderer, I roam around the world, I see the world, I learn from the world – Bhupen Hazarika

Bhupen Hazarika, the revered Indian playback singer, lyricist, musician, poet, and filmmaker from Assam, is known for his profound and inspiring words. He was often referred to as “Sudha Kontho” which means “nectar-throated” in Assamese. His songs, which were mainly written and sung in Assamese, are celebrated for their themes of humanity, universal brotherhood, and empathy. They have been translated and sung in many languages, including Bengali and Hindi1.

One of his famous lines from the song “Moi Eti Jajabor” (I am a wanderer) which captures the essence of his philosophy is:

“I am a wanderer, I am a wanderer, I roam around the world, I see the world, I learn from the world.”

This line reflects his belief in the idea of learning through experience and the unity of mankind. Hazarika’s work has left a lasting impact on the cultural landscape, not just in Assam but across India and Bangladesh. His legacy continues to inspire generations with his message of racial harmony, tolerance, equality, and universal love. He was posthumously awarded India’s highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna, in 2019, acknowledging his immense contribution to Indian culture.
