In Kundalini Yoga, the three granthis, or psychic knots, are significant obstacles that must be overcome for the Kundalini energy to rise through the chakras and achieve spiritual awakening. These knots are:
- Brahma Granthi: Located between the Root (Muladhara) and Sacral (Swadisthana) Chakras, this knot is associated with primal instincts and survival patterns. It represents attachment to material and physical needs, such as food, shelter, and sensual pleasures. When this knot is pierced, it helps transcend basic survival instincts and move towards higher consciousness12.
- Vishnu Granthi: Situated between the Sacral (Swadisthana) and Heart (Anahata) Chakras, this knot is linked to emotional attachments and ego. It governs love, passion, and emotional patterns. Overcoming this knot allows one to move beyond personal desires and emotional dependencies, fostering a deeper sense of compassion and selflessness12.
- Rudra Granthi: Found between the Heart (Anahata) and Third Eye (Ajna) Chakras, this knot is related to the mind and spiritual ego. It represents the final barrier to spiritual enlightenment, encompassing illusions and attachments to one’s identity and intellectual understanding. Piercing this knot leads to the dissolution of the ego and the realization of universal consciousness13.
These granthis are seen as barriers to spiritual growth and liberation (moksha). Practices such as pranayama (breath control), bandhas (body locks), meditation, and asanas (postures) are used to untangle these knots and facilitate the free flow of Kundalini energy
