Cane and Abel

The story of Cain and Abel is found in the book of Genesis, chapter 4. It tells the story of the first murder in human history, when Cain, the elder brother and a farmer, killed Abel, the younger brother and a shepherd, out of jealousy and anger. God had accepted Abel’s offering of the best of his flock, but rejected Cain’s offering of some of his crops. Cain then lured Abel to the field and killed him with a stone. God punished Cain by making him a wanderer on the earth, and put a mark on him to protect him from being killed by others.

The metaphorical meaning behind this story has been interpreted in different ways by various scholars and traditions. Some of the possible meanings are:

  • A metaphor for the conflict between nomadic and sedentary lifestyles, as Abel represents the pastoral nomads who depend on God’s grace and provision, while Cain represents the settled farmers who rely on their own labor and technology.
  • A metaphor for the origin of sin and the need for redemption, as Cain and Abel represent the fallen human nature that is prone to envy, violence, and rebellion against God, and the need for God’s mercy and forgiveness.
  • A metaphor for the two types of people and the cities they build, as Augustine suggested, with Abel representing the heavenly city that is based on the love of God, and Cain representing the earthly city that is based on the love of self.
  • A metaphor for the sin of casteism, as some have argued, with Cain and Abel representing the unequal and unjust relationship between the dominant and the oppressed groups in society, and the need for social justice and liberation.
