the good of the individual is contained in the good of all

John Ruskin

the work of a lawyer and a barber is equally dignified, and that a life of labor, such as that of a tiller or a craftsman, is a life worth living.

John Ruskin’s book “Unto This Last” had a profound impact on Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy and actions. After reading it in 1904, Gandhi was inspired by Ruskin’s ideas and Principles.

These principles influenced Gandhi’s concept of ‘Sarvodaya’, meaning ‘universal upliftment’ or ‘progress of all’, leading to his advocacy for inclusive growth and the development of all sections of society.

Ruskin’s emphasis on the dignity of manual labor also resonated with Gandhi’s principle of ‘Nai Talim’, which integrated education with productive work.
