Live deep enough to realise the God within

Mahakavi Vidyapati

Vidyapati, also known as Maithil Kavi Kokil, was a 14th-century Indian poet and scholar. Born around 1352 in Bisfi, Bihar, he was a pioneer in using the Maithili language for his poetic works. He was a devotee of Shiva, but also wrote love songs and devotional Vaishnava songs.

His compositions, rich in erudite Sanskrit and passionate Maithili, often celebrated the love of Radha and Krishna, contributing significantly to the Bhakti movement. Vidyapati served as a royal priest and enjoyed patronage under kings of Mithila, which influenced his literary output. His legacy extends beyond literature, impacting Eastern Indian culture and languages, earning him the title ‘Father of Bengali literature’
