Six Shastras

The six shastras, or Vedangas, are the auxiliary texts that explain the proper interpretation and application of the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of Hinduism. They are as follows:

  • Vyakarana: The shastra of grammar, which deals with the rules and structure of the Sanskrit language.
  • Shiksha: The shastra of phonetics, which deals with the correct pronunciation and recitation of the Vedic mantras.
  • Nirukta: The shastra of etymology, which deals with the origin and meaning of the Vedic words.
  • Chhanda: The shastra of meter, which deals with the poetic and rhythmic aspects of the Vedic verses.
  • Jyotisha: The shastra of astronomy, which deals with the calculation of the auspicious times and dates for the Vedic rituals.
  • Kalpa: The shastra of ritual, which deals with the detailed instructions and procedures for the Vedic sacrifices and ceremonies.
