Avatara: The Divine Within Us

Hello everyone,

Today, I want to share my thoughts on the concept of Avatara, which is often understood as the descent of God to Earth. Traditionally, it is believed that divine beings incarnate in human or other forms to restore cosmic order and guide humanity. However, I have a different perspective that I find both refreshing and empowering: rather than God descending to Earth, it is the elevation of an ordinary mortal to divine heights through the cultivation of extraordinary qualities.

The Human Journey to Divinity

In my view, the essence of Avatara is not about a celestial being coming down but about humans rising up. This journey involves individuals transcending their ordinary selves, developing divine qualities, and becoming embodiments of higher principles. This transformation is recognized by those around them, who see these individuals as true revelations of the divine on Earth.

This perspective aligns with the idea that divinity is inherent within all beings and can be realized through selfless actions, moral integrity, and alignment with the natural laws of creation. Such individuals, through their elevated state, serve as protectors and defenders of the righteous path, inspiring others to follow suit.

Examples of Elevated Individuals

Throughout history, there have been numerous examples of individuals who have elevated themselves to embody divine qualities. Here are a few notable figures:

  1. Lord Krishna: Krishna, a central figure in Hinduism, is celebrated for his wisdom, compassion, and divine playfulness. His life, as depicted in texts like the Bhagavad Gita and Mahabharata, showcases his role as a guide, protector, and teacher of dharma (righteousness). Krishna’s teachings on duty, love, and devotion continue to inspire millions.
  2. Buddha: Siddhartha Gautama, who became the Buddha, exemplified the journey of self-realization and enlightenment. His teachings on compassion, mindfulness, and the middle path continue to guide millions on their spiritual journeys.
  3. Mahavira: The 24th Tirthankara of Jainism, Mahavira’s life was marked by intense meditation and severe austerities. He taught the principles of non-violence, truthfulness, and non-attachment, which continue to influence Jain practices and philosophy.
  4. Jesus Christ: Jesus of Nazareth, revered by Christians as the Son of God, exemplified selfless love, compassion, and forgiveness. His teachings and actions, including healing the sick and advocating for the marginalized, have inspired countless individuals to pursue a life of virtue and service.
  5. Mother Teresa: Her life was dedicated to serving the poorest of the poor. Through her selfless actions and deep compassion, she became a living embodiment of love and kindness, recognized globally as a symbol of humanitarianism.
  6. Nelson Mandela: Mandela’s journey from a prisoner to the President of South Africa is a powerful example of resilience, forgiveness, and dedication to justice. His ability to rise above personal suffering and work towards reconciliation and peace made him a revered figure worldwide.
  7. Ramakrishna Paramahamsa: A mystic and saint, Ramakrishna’s life was marked by profound spiritual experiences and teachings that emphasized the unity of all religions and the realization of God within oneself.
  8. Ramana Maharshi: An Indian sage known for his teachings on self-enquiry and realization of the Self, Ramana Maharshi’s life was marked by profound spiritual experiences. His emphasis on inner reflection and understanding one’s true nature has inspired many to seek enlightenment.

These individuals, through their extraordinary lives, have shown that it is possible for humans to elevate themselves to divine heights. Their actions, always aligned with higher principles, serve as a testament to the potential within each of us to realize and manifest our highest selves.

Conclusion

The concept of Avatara, when viewed through the lens of human elevation, becomes a powerful narrative of self-transformation and divine realization. It reminds us that divinity is not a distant, external force but a potential within each of us, waiting to be realized through selfless actions, moral integrity, and alignment with the natural laws of creation. By looking at the lives of those who have elevated themselves, we find inspiration and guidance on our own journeys towards realizing the divine within.
