Sam Manekshaw was the first Field Marshal of India and the chief of the army staff during the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War, which led to the creation of Bangladesh. He was a Parsi born in Amritsar in 1914 and joined the Indian Military Academy in 1932. He fought in World War II and was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry. He also served in the 1947, 1962, 1965, and 1971 wars with Pakistan and China. He was known for his courage, charisma, and wit. He retired in 1973 and died in 2008. He is regarded as one of the greatest military leaders of India and a national hero
