Ursula K. Le Guin (1929–2018) was an influential American author who mastered the genres of science fiction and fantasy to explore complex social, political, and philosophical themes.

Known for works like the Earthsea series and Hainish Cycle novels such as The Left Hand of Darkness and The Dispossessed, she was a major feminist writer who used her platform to question societal norms around gender, power, and environmentalism.

Her writing, which also included poetry, essays, and children’s books, was deeply informed by her parents’ work in anthropology and psychology. A vocal critic of the publishing industry’s arbitrary genre boundaries, Le Guin received numerous accolades, including six Nebula Awards, seven Hugo Awards, and the National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters. Her work challenged readers to imagine alternative ways of being and resist established power structures.
