Why the age of AI may make human presence, inner stillness and spiritual intelligence more valuable than ever
I actively use AI every day.
It helps me organise ideas, analyse information, improve communication, create content and move across disciplines. It enables me to think faster, explore further and accomplish in minutes what might otherwise have taken hours.
The more I use AI, however, the more I recognise a profound paradox:
AI can accelerate human progress. It has an equal potential to diminish it.
It can expand our intelligence, but it can also tempt us to stop exercising our own. It can deepen human capability, but it can also create dependency. It can help us solve extraordinarily complex problems while quietly weakening our ability to observe, question, reflect and decide for ourselves.
This reflection is therefore not merely about how powerful AI may become. It is about understanding what will become more valuable as AI development moves into full stream.
When intelligence becomes available on demand, what will remain uniquely human?
When machines can work across disciplines, generate ideas and perform increasingly complex tasks with limited human intervention, what will happen to human creativity, intuition and judgement?
Will we use AI to augment our intelligence, or will we gradually outsource our intelligence to it?
Will we continue to value human beings when AI appears faster, more accurate and more efficient?
And could the rise of artificial intelligence unexpectedly make human presence, a calm mind, spiritual practice and even God more important than ever before?
These are the questions I want to explore.
From Narrow AI to General Intelligence
What we largely experience today is narrow AI. It performs specialised tasks such as recognising images, translating languages, playing chess, analysing data or generating text.
However, these specialised capabilities are beginning to connect.
AI is becoming increasingly capable of working across formats, tools and domains. It is moving from simply answering questions towards planning, coordinating and carrying out complex activities. Tasks that require human supervision today may gradually be performed with less human intervention and, eventually, perhaps with almost none.
This is where the conversation moves towards Artificial General Intelligence, or AGI.
AGI is generally imagined as an intelligence that can operate across a broad range of intellectual tasks rather than remaining confined to one speciality. Superintelligence would take this further, describing an intelligence that may exceed the strongest human capabilities across many domains.
Whether these developments arrive exactly as predicted remains uncertain. However, the direction appears clear: AI is becoming broader, more integrated and more autonomous.
This is usually presented as a technological development. I believe it is equally a human and spiritual development.
When AI Becomes a Polymath
For much of human history, the ability to connect multiple disciplines has been considered rare.
A polymath does not simply know many things. A polymath recognises relationships between subjects that others treat as separate.
Technology may be connected with psychology. Business may be connected with philosophy. Energy efficiency may be connected with sustainability. Leadership may be connected with self-inquiry. Data may be connected with human behaviour.
The value of polymathy lies not only in possessing knowledge, but also in seeing meaningful patterns across boundaries.
AI is rapidly entering this polymathic space.
It can bring together ideas from engineering, medicine, economics, history, literature, psychology, philosophy and countless other disciplines. It can identify patterns, generate possibilities and suggest combinations that may not be immediately visible to an individual human mind.
In that sense, AI could become the most accessible polymathic companion humanity has ever created.
It can help us travel across disciplines. It can challenge our assumptions. It can reveal patterns hidden within vast quantities of information. It can help us formulate innovative ideas, examine the world from new perspectives and arrive at observations that may eventually benefit humanity.
Yet there is an important distinction.
Connecting existing knowledge is not necessarily the same as receiving an original insight.
Can AI Receive a Download?
The finest human thinkers may not create entirely from nothing.
Every thought emerges within language, memory, culture, experience, observation and everything that came before it. Human creativity, too, often combines existing elements in unfamiliar ways.
AI does something similar, but with extraordinary reach and speed. It learns patterns from available data and produces new arrangements from those patterns. Some of these arrangements are useful. Some are surprising. Some may even appear original.
But human beings also speak about another source of insight.
An idea sometimes arrives in silence.
A scientist suddenly sees a solution after stepping away from the problem. An artist receives an image before fully understanding its meaning. A poet hears a line that appears to come from somewhere beyond deliberate thought. A spiritual seeker experiences an insight that cannot easily be reduced to a logical sequence.
We may call these experiences intuition, inspiration, revelation or a download.
A download, in this sense, is not merely information arriving quickly. It is an insight emerging from a particular state of mind, or perhaps from a state beyond the ordinary mind.
It may arise when the mind is calm, receptive and temporarily free from its habitual movements.
Perhaps science will eventually explain these experiences completely. Perhaps AI will become capable of producing outputs that are indistinguishable from their results. We should remain humble about declaring what AI will never be able to do.
Nevertheless, a deeper question remains:
Can intelligence without lived consciousness receive an insight, or can it only create something that resembles one?
AI can generate language that sounds mystical. But does it experience mystery?
It can describe silence. But can it become silent?
It can explain surrender. But can it surrender?
It can write about God. But can it long for God?
The distinction may not always be visible in the output. It may be known only through experience.
Intelligence Can Be Augmented or Outsourced
AI can unquestionably augment human intelligence.
It can help us see more, process more and consider possibilities that might otherwise remain inaccessible. A human being can take an AI-generated idea, place it within a real context, combine it with experience and transform it into something useful and original.
That is a healthy relationship with AI.
The danger begins when augmentation becomes substitution.
If I use AI to examine my thinking, I may become a better thinker.
If I use AI to avoid thinking, my own intelligence may gradually weaken.
If I ask AI to offer different perspectives, my mind may expand.
If I ask AI to decide what I must believe, my mind may become dependent.
If I use AI as an instrument, it can become extraordinarily valuable. If I quietly appoint it as the master of my judgement, I may become its servant without even noticing.
This is one of the great risks of the coming age.
AI may not need to dominate humanity through force. Human beings may willingly surrender their intelligence in exchange for comfort, speed and certainty.
An AI-generated answer can sound complete. It can be beautifully written and supported by more information than any individual could personally verify. Gradually, we may stop asking whether something is true, wise or beneficial. We may accept it simply because it appears intelligent.
At that moment, the problem is not that AI has become too powerful.
The problem is that the human being has stopped participating.
The New Human Divide
The future may not simply be divided between people who use AI and people who do not.
Almost everyone may eventually use it in some form.
The more meaningful division may be between those who use AI while retaining their intelligence and those who outsource their intelligence to it.
Most people use technology. A much smaller number understand it, shape it or consciously determine how it should be used. AI may intensify this difference.
One group may become increasingly dependent on systems that recommend what to read, what to buy, what to believe, whom to trust and how to act.
Another, perhaps much smaller, group may deliberately preserve the ability to observe, question, reflect and decide.
These people will not necessarily reject AI. They may use it exceptionally well. But they will not confuse access to intelligence with possession of wisdom.
They will know when to consult AI and when to step away from it.
They will know when speed is valuable and when speed is destroying understanding.
They will recognise that an efficient decision is not always a wise decision.
Most importantly, they will retain responsibility for what they choose.
In the age of AI, preserving our intelligence may require deliberate effort. It will mean continuing to read deeply, reflect independently, engage with opposing views, sit with unresolved questions and arrive at conclusions that are genuinely our own.
The human mind must not become merely the final approval layer for a machine-generated answer.
AI Can Appear Innovative Without Being Wise
AI may also create another difficulty.
It can produce something that appears innovative even when it is only an intelligent rearrangement of what already exists. Most people will not have access to all the information needed to verify whether an idea is genuinely new.
We may therefore become increasingly dependent on AI not only to generate ideas, but also to judge their originality.
This creates a circular problem.
The system produces the idea, explains why it is innovative and then persuades us of its value. A human being who has already surrendered independent judgement may not question any part of this process.
But an unfamiliar idea is not automatically a wise idea.
A surprising idea is not necessarily a beneficial one.
An original idea is not necessarily a humane one.
Innovation must therefore remain connected to discernment. AI may help us generate possibilities, but human beings must still ask whether those possibilities serve life, dignity, freedom and the larger good.
Why Humans Will Still Choose Humans
As AI becomes more capable, human beings may continue to choose other human beings, even when human performance is not technically optimal.
Why?
Because people do not seek only solutions. They also seek presence.
A person may prefer a human doctor who listens with genuine concern, even when an AI system can analyse information more comprehensively. A learner may prefer a teacher who recognises uncertainty and responds with patience. An employee may value a leader not merely for making the most efficient decision, but for understanding the people affected by it.
A coach does not simply provide an answer. A coach holds a space in which another person can discover an answer.
A friend does not optimise our sadness. A friend sits beside us.
A spiritual guide does not merely provide information about life. A spiritual guide may help us experience life differently.
Someone may choose a human being not because that person is faster, more accurate or more knowledgeable, but because another consciousness is present.
This preference should not be dismissed as irrational. It may express a fundamental human need.
In an age filled with synthetic communication, genuine attention may become exceptionally precious. When artificial personalities can be endlessly patient, agreeable and available, the imperfect but authentic presence of another person may become even more meaningful.
Human attention may become a kind of luxury, not because it should be available only to the wealthy, but because it may become increasingly rare.
To be fully seen, heard and cared for by another human being may acquire a value that cannot be measured only through efficiency.
Human Imperfection May Become Valuable
We have spent much of modern history attempting to eliminate human imperfection from systems.
We want fewer errors, faster decisions, predictable outcomes and consistent performance. AI promises to help us move much further in this direction.
Yet human imperfection also contains something valuable.
A human being can reconsider a decision because of compassion. A person can recognise suffering that does not fit neatly within the available data. Someone can change direction because a situation feels morally wrong, even when the calculations suggest otherwise.
Of course, human judgement can be biased, emotional and deeply mistaken. Human involvement is not automatically superior.
But the answer cannot be to eliminate the human being from every important decision.
There may be situations in which people consciously prefer human involvement, even if it is slower or less optimal. They may want a real person to listen, guide, reassure, challenge or take responsibility.
Choosing human intervention may itself become a way of preserving our humanity.
The State of Mind Behind the Technology
Technology is not separate from the consciousness of those who create and control it.
If the state of mind behind AI development is growth at any cost, then greater intelligence may only accelerate greed, manipulation and control.
If the intention is genuinely centred on human wellbeing, AI could support healthcare, education, scientific research, sustainability, accessibility and many other areas of human development.
The same technology can serve entirely different intentions.
This is why ethics, regulation, governance and responsible development are essential. But regulation alone cannot solve the problem.
Rules may restrict particular uses, but they cannot purify human intention.
Throughout history, people have accepted harmful ideas in exchange for money, power, identity, belonging or the promise of participating in something important. Human beings can be persuaded that destruction is service, control is protection and fanaticism is faith.
AI will not remove this human vulnerability. It may amplify it.
The question is not only whether AI is intelligent.
The question is: What is the state of mind of the people guiding it?
Is the intention development at any cost?
Is it profit without responsibility?
Is it power without accountability?
Or is it development with humanity at the centre?
The most important intelligence in the age of AI may therefore be the intelligence, maturity and consciousness of those who decide how AI is created, governed and used.
Conscious Communities Will Matter
It may not be possible to prevent every misuse of AI.
Human beings can create systems privately, locally or outside mainstream institutions. Some will use AI for human benefit. Others will use it to gain power, manipulate behaviour or cause harm.
We may be able to restrict dangerous applications at scale. We may develop safeguards, rules and institutions. Yet no system can completely eliminate the human capacity for misuse.
What may become essential are conscious communities.
These are communities that do not reject technology, but remain deeply attentive to the intentions and consequences behind it. They ask not only what can be built, but also what should be built.
They question whether development respects human dignity.
They recognise that capability does not automatically create legitimacy.
They understand that technological progress without inner development can magnify the very problems it claims to solve.
A conscious community need not be enormous. A relatively small number of thoughtful, courageous and responsible individuals can influence the direction of institutions and societies.
The future may depend not only on how intelligent AI becomes, but also on whether enough human beings remain conscious while using it.
Slowing Down Will Become a Flex
Technological development is unlikely to slow simply because human beings need more time to understand its consequences.
Competition rewards speed. Markets reward first movers. Organisations fear being left behind. Individuals feel pressure to adapt constantly.
In such a world, slowing down may become an act of strength.
A calm mind will become a flex.
The ability to pause before reacting, think before agreeing and remain silent before generating another answer may become rare and powerful.
The future may admire not only those who can do more, but also those who know what does not need to be done.
We may rediscover the value of unhurried conversations, contemplative spaces, local communities and genuine human touch. People may seek environments in which they are not constantly measured, predicted, prompted or optimised.
There will be immense pressure to move at the speed of the machine.
Human beings may need to rediscover the courage to move at the speed of consciousness.
Slowing down will not necessarily mean rejecting progress. It will mean allowing sufficient space for wisdom to accompany progress.
Spiritual Practices Will Become More Important
Spiritual practices may become increasingly important because they protect something that technology cannot protect on our behalf: the quality of our own attention.
Meditation, prayer, yoga, self-inquiry, devotion, service, contemplation and silence are not escapes from an intelligent world.
They may become ways of remaining intelligent within it.
These practices train us to observe thought without immediately obeying it. They help us distinguish information from understanding, stimulation from fulfilment and mental activity from awareness.
AI can produce endless content. Spiritual practice teaches us that more content does not necessarily create more clarity.
AI can give us immediate answers. Spiritual practice helps us remain with a question long enough for it to transform us.
AI can personalise our external world. Spiritual practice asks us to investigate the person for whom the world is being personalised.
As machines become more capable of imitating conversation, creativity and reasoning, human beings may become more interested in the nature of consciousness itself.
We may ask not only, “What can intelligence do?” but also, “What is it that is aware of intelligence?”
That question may bring spirituality back to the centre of human life.
God Will Make a Comeback
As AI becomes more powerful, I believe God will return to the human conversation in a major way.
Not necessarily through organised religion alone. Not necessarily through one doctrine, institution or language.
God may return as the question that data cannot close.
AI works with information, patterns and probabilities. It may model human behaviour with extraordinary sophistication. It may explain how beliefs are formed and how spiritual experiences affect the mind and body.
But explanation does not eliminate wonder.
The more AI reveals about the measurable world, the more human beings may ask about what cannot be reduced to measurement.
What is consciousness?
Why is there existence?
What gives life meaning?
What is love when it is not merely explained as chemistry?
What is the source of intuition?
Who am I when my roles, memories and descriptions are removed?
AI may provide thousands of responses to these questions. But an answer is not the same as a realisation.
Knowing the definition of silence is not the experience of silence.
Knowing the language of devotion is not devotion.
Knowing about God is not knowing God.
In a world saturated with artificial intelligence, people may begin searching more intensely for that which cannot be artificially produced within them.
Two Worlds May Emerge
There may emerge two broad ways of living.
One world may rely almost entirely on data, computation and AI-mediated decisions. People may increasingly trust systems to determine what is relevant, efficient, desirable and true.
Another world may use those same technologies while remaining open to silence, intuition, consciousness, spiritual practice, God and what we may call downloads.
These two worlds need not become enemies.
The real possibility lies in their integration.
AI can help us understand the outer world. Spiritual practice can help us understand the one who is looking.
AI can extend intelligence. God can restore humility.
AI can reveal patterns. Silence can reveal meaning.
AI can generate possibilities. Human consciousness must decide which possibilities are worth pursuing.
AI can offer an answer. A human being must still decide what is worth asking.
The Choice Before Us
I do not believe the future requires us to choose between AI and humanity.
The real choice is between conscious use and unconscious surrender.
We can use AI to expand learning without abandoning curiosity.
We can use it to cross disciplines without losing depth.
We can allow it to improve decisions without handing over moral responsibility.
We can welcome its capabilities while preserving our capacity to wonder, doubt, love, care and receive.
AI should stimulate our intelligence, not replace it.
It should expand our possibilities, not determine our purpose.
It should support human development, not quietly redefine what it means to be human.
The future may not belong simply to those who possess the most powerful AI.
It may belong to those who can use powerful AI without losing possession of their own minds.
It may belong to those who preserve genuine human presence when artificial interaction becomes effortless.
It may belong to those who can move quickly but still know how to stop.
It may belong to those who can access immense quantities of information while remaining humble before the unknown.
It may belong to those who can work with machines without beginning to live like machines.
And perhaps, in a strange and beautiful paradox, the rise of artificial intelligence will not make God irrelevant.
Perhaps it will remind us why God was needed in the first place.
Not to provide more information.
Not to make every decision for us.
Not to remove all uncertainty from life.
But to help us remain human.
To help us remain conscious.
And to help us remember who we are.
