Isaac Luria
Isaac Luria (1534–1572), known as the Ari, was a Jewish mystic whose teachings reshaped Kabbalah. Born in Jerusalem and later settling in Safed, he developed a profound system of cosmic theology. Central to his thought was tzimtzum—the divine contraction that allowed creation—and shevirat ha-kelim, the shattering of vessels, which explained evil and imperfection. Humanity’s role, he taught, was tikkun olam, repairing the world through spiritual acts. His disciples, especially Hayyim Vital, preserved his doctrines, which deeply influenced Jewish mysticism and Hasidism. Luria’s vision of cosmic exile and restoration gave mystical depth to Jewish practice, inspiring generations of seekers.
