Vedanta Desika
Vedanta Desika, born Venkatanatha in Thoopul near Kanchipuram, was a luminous scholar of Vishishtadvaita. Trained under his uncle Kidambi Appullaar, he mastered scriptures and philosophy early, earning titles like Kavitarkika Simha (lion among poets and debaters). A prolific writer, he composed hymns such as Hayagriva Stotra, Paduka Sahasra, and Dayashataka, alongside philosophical treatises like Shatadushani. He emphasized prapatti—surrender to God’s grace—through vivid analogies, shaping Vadakalai thought. Living simply, sustained by alms, he dedicated his life to devotion and teaching. His legacy endures in temples, texts, and traditions, where intellect and bhakti harmonize in timeless resonance.
