who is lavish with words is cheap in deeds.
Sir Walter Raleigh
Sir Walter Raleigh, born in Devon around 1552, rose as a soldier, poet, and explorer, becoming Queen Elizabeth I’s favorite and knighted in 1585. He helped suppress Irish rebellions, fought the Spanish Armada, and sponsored the ill-fated Roanoke colony, naming Virginia for the “Virgin Queen.” His secret marriage to Elizabeth Throckmorton cost him royal favor, leading to imprisonment. Obsessed with El Dorado, he launched expeditions to South America, introducing tobacco and potatoes to England. Under James I, he was accused of treason, confined to the Tower, and authored The History of the World. Released briefly, his failed Guiana venture sealed his fate—executed in 1618.
O eloquent, just, and mighty Death!
