Cornelius Vanderbilt
Cornelius Vanderbilt was an iconic American business tycoon who completely transformed global transportation. Born poor in 1794, he began operating a small New York harbor ferry as an ambitious teenager. Through ruthless competitiveness and low pricing, he built a massive steamboat empire before pivotally shifting his focus to major railroads during his later years.
He consolidated vital rail networks, including the famous New York Central Railroad, creating an incredibly efficient domestic transport system. Universally nicknamed “The Commodore,” he accumulated unparalleled personal wealth. In 1873, he provided the crucial million-dollar foundational endowment to establish Vanderbilt University, successfully cementing a grand, lasting, and philanthropic legacy before passing away in 1877.
