Saadat Hassan Manto
Saadat Hassan Manto (1912–1955) was a fearless Urdu writer whose sharp short stories exposed the raw truths of human nature and society. Born in Ludhiana, he became renowned for his unflinching portrayals of Partition’s horrors, capturing the trauma, violence, and dislocation with brutal honesty. His works like Toba Tek Singh and Thanda Gosht challenged hypocrisy, censorship, and moral pretensions, often landing him in court for obscenity trials. Manto’s prose was stark yet deeply humane, reflecting empathy for society’s marginalized. Despite poverty and alcoholism, he remained uncompromising in his art, leaving behind a legacy as literature’s most provocative conscience.
