Vithabai Bhau
Vithabai Bhau Mang Narayangaonkar, born in Pandharpur in 1935, rose as the “Tamasha Samradni,” queen of Lavani and Tamasha folk theatre. Raised in a family troupe, she performed from childhood without formal training, captivating audiences with her natural talent. Her legendary devotion was shown when, nine months pregnant, she delivered her child backstage, cut the cord with a stone, and returned to perform. Honored with President’s medals in 1957 and 1990, she popularized Lavani’s rhythm and Tamasha’s vibrancy across Maharashtra. Despite fame, she faced hardship, yet her legacy endures through the annual Vithabai Narayangaonkar Lifetime Achievement Award
