Janabai
Janabai (1258–1350), born in Gangakhed, Maharashtra, was a maidservant in saint Namdev’s household and a luminous poet-saint of the Bhakti movement. Despite her humble origins and lack of formal learning, she composed nearly 300 abhangas in Marathi, expressing profound devotion to Vithoba of Pandharpur. In her verses, God becomes her companion in daily chores—grinding grain, washing clothes, sharing meals—revealing the sacred in the ordinary. Guided by Namdev, she embodied humility, equality, and spiritual intimacy. Revered among Varkaris, Janabai’s voice uplifted women and marginalized communities, affirming that divine love transcends caste and gender. Her songs remain sung with devotion today.
