Sonam Wangchuck
Sonam Wangchuk, born in Ladakh in 1966, is an engineer, innovator, and education reformer who transformed Himalayan learning and climate resilience. Founder of SECMOL, he redesigned schooling to suit Ladakh’s culture and environment, creating solar-powered campuses free of fossil fuels. His initiative, Operation New Hope, reformed government schools through community collaboration. Inspired by Chewang Norphel, Wangchuk developed the Ice Stupa technique, storing winter water as towering ice cones to irrigate fields in spring. His pioneering work in sustainability and education earned him global honors, including the Ramon Magsaysay Award. Wangchuk embodies practical wisdom, blending tradition with innovation to empower Ladakh.
